The Isuzu FA Vase, Second Qualifying Round
Saturday September 24th 2022
Diss Town v HISTON
3PM Kick Off
We make a rare trip east as we head to Norfolk to face Diss Town in a break from league action.
The FA Vase is a competition that has provided some memorable moments for those involved with both clubs, however none more so than back in 1994, when ‘The Tangies’ went all the way to Wembley and clinched the coveted trophy. They did so defeating Taunton Town 2-1 (AET) in front of 13,450 under the old twin towers, thanks to a late penalty from Paul Gibbs, before Peter Mendham grabbed the winner in extra time.
Our own exploits in the competition came more recently, when in the 2018/19 season Lance Key’s Eastern Counties champions made it as far as the 5th Round Proper, bowing out at the hands of Northwich Victoria after extra time. This is our first appearance since that campaign, with a 6-2 victory over Debenham LC in the 1st Qualifying Round setting up this tie. This will be ‘The Tangies’ first action in the competition this term.
Mark Sutcliffe’s side have made a reasonable start to their Eastern Counties League, Division One North campaign, having collected 10 points from their opening 8 fixtures. They currently sit in 7th place from the 19 sides in their Step 6 division.
Meanwhile, The Stutes will be hoping for a change of fortune in front of goal, having put the Wellingborough defence under sustained pressure, particularly in the second half of Tuesday evening’s game. The home side have only conceded 3 times at their home of Brewers Green Lane so will likely provide a tough test to break down defensively.
Lance Key will again be able to call upon the services on central defender Max York, who re-signed ahead of Tuesday’s game. Pat Bexfield is still a doubt, as he works his way back to full fitness, as is the same for the experienced Lee Smith.
A reminder that if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie shall be decided by kicks from the penalty mark.
