Southern League Challenge Cup 1st Round
Monday 3rd October 2016

It took a penalty shoot out to decide the winner of this League Cup tie after Cameron Watson’s first half strike was cancelled out by Tunde Adewunmi with 7 minutes left on the clock.

Steve Fallon welcomed Ben Yeomans, Chris Hyem and Cameron Watson back into the side but was without the suspended Pat Bexfield and will have been pleased with the performance of his team. Although City had plenty of possession during the 90 minutes they struggled to really test Conroy whilst in attack the team were a threat with Yeomans supported by Gwynne, Allan, Chambers- Shaw and Gardner at every opportunity.

Watson put us ahead in the 28th minute when Chambers-Shaw’s free kick into the box was taken down well by Yeomans who was denied twice by blocking defenders before the ball was lifted in again where Watson met it with force from close in.

After the break City spent plenty of time in our half but were again frustrated by some solid Histon defending. We looked dangerous when breaking though and nearly doubled the lead when Yeomans forced an error from Femiola and went through one on one against Ordonez but his attempt to chip the outrushing keeper wasn’t high enough and was cleared.

City drew level with a little over five minutes left to play. Woolfe made himself some space to fire the ball low across the 6 yard area where Adewunmi was waiting to tap home.

The hosts pressed hard for the winner as the clocked ticked down but our defence stood firm and the game went to penalties. Niall Conroy saved well from Charlie Day before Enol Ordonez’s spot kick hit the upright. Adewunmi scored with City’s third but by then Chambers-Shaw, Sibanda and Gwynne had all impressively beaten Ordonez. All that was left was for Matty Allan too step up and convert which he did comfortably to put us through to the next Round.
