Matt Clements made a couple of changes to the side that started against Farnborough on Saturday with two new signings going straight into the side for this Bank Holiday derby. Lewis Clayton completed his move back to Histon on Monday morning, a welcome return for the ex-Histon scholar whilst Jake Chambers-Shaw also came into the side having signed on dual registration from Soham Town Rangers.
Niall Conroy was called into action on 20 minutes with an excellent save to deny the hosts but with 23 minutes on the clock the home side went ahead, Gary Cohen stooping low to direct the ball past Conroy from close range. Conroy was again in fine form to deny the home side another before we finally threatened their goal. A nice move down the right hand side found Max York bursting into the area but his curling right footed shot went just past the far post.
On the hour mark Clayton made a surging run forward, beating off the challenge of three Royston players to get into the box before laying the ball across for Simon Unwin but the midfielders’ shot went wide when well placed to score. Soon after Royston doubled their lead when Spyros Mentis went one on one against Conroy to make it 2-0.
The introduction of Jos Gwynne and Danny Gould added some spark to the side for the last twenty minutes and their pace and direct running caused problems for the defenders and set up a number of chances but we couldn’t find a way through.
