Histon Football Club is delighted to announce that Matt Payne has been appointed as the Men’s Reserve Team Manager.
Payne joins, having gained plenty of experience in both men’s, and women’s management, having most recently been in charge of Cambridge University Press Reserves from 2019-22, and our very own Ladies Team from 2008-2020. Payne had also spent of 3 seasons at the helm at Abington from 2014-17 in the Cambs County League, and is currently coaching both the men’s, and women’s sides at Long Road Sixth Form College, having done so since 2007.
On his new role at Bridge Road, Payne had to say: “I am really pleased to be taking on the challenge of running the new Histon Men’s Reserve Team for the upcoming season. It was difficult leaving Cambridge University Press Reserves after a successful 2021/22 season, seeing the team finish in 2nd place, and with that promotion to Senior A. But the opportunity to take on this role, at a club that I am already heavily involved with, was too good of an opportunity to turn down. With this team in place, it now helps with a clear football pathway for the Under 18’s to gain more exposure to men’s football, and to give them the platform to try and move into our 1st team at the club. With both men’s team training together, it will really create a whole club feel that you do not get with many other clubs in the county. Whilst we want the Reserves to be successful within the league and cup competitions, the priority is player development, U18’s>Reserves>1st Team. I am also looking forward to working with Lance, Mark, and Simon from the 1st Team’s management, which I am sure will only benefit me further in my development.”
The newly formed side have recently been accepted into The Cambridgeshire County League, having been given an indication that they will likely be placed within Senior B. Whilst Cambridge City are still groundsharing at Bridge Road, home fixtures shall be primarily played at Cottenham Recreation Ground, with a handful of evening games to be hosted at The Bridge.
