We would love to show you the highlights of our incredible win at Aylestone Park but the gremlins that infiltrated our video camera earlier this year returned with vengeance on Saturday to spoil our plans.
It is perhaps some consolation to know that had the camera been working it would have shown an outstanding performance by the Stutes to inflict a first league defeat of the season on our hosts. The game was fairly even up until the 30th minute, but we then hit Aylestone with a three-goals blitz in just 14 minutes. First Connor Barnes, then Jordan Foster and finally Luke Kenny all found the net to put us firmly in charge of the game. Young Kenny’s goal was a real peach, guiding the ball past the keeper with the outside of his foot after some superb one-touch passing opened up the home defence like a tin of baked beans. (If you get the chance to see Kevin Gould’s video on Twitter, do take a look). There was even time for Jordan Foster to hit the woodwork before the half time whistle came to Aylestone’s rescue.
In the second half Aylestone went all out attack, but we defended so well that Jake West was rarely troubled. The home side pulled a goal back with six minutes left on the clock, but we responded two minutes later by sweeping forward and notching a fourth goal – Fozzy Foster capitalised on a misplaced pass. And that was it. Game over.
What made the win all the more remarkable was that it was achieved with a depleted side. Three players went down with a virus on the Friday, including Max York. Joe O’Neill was suspended and Max Ryan was unavailable. Luke Kenny made his first start for the First team and Jack Berriman made his senior debut. Yet despite all the setbacks Matt, Mark and Wayne’s game plan and the togetherness of the Histon side prevailed.
Our priority now is to search every charity shop in South Cambs for a replacement video camera. Damn those gremlins!
