Ely City 1 Histon 2
Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division
Thursday 31st October 2019

On a bitterly cold evening, Histon went out looking to make it 3 wins out of 3 on the road in what would be a tough contest against a physical and well drilled Ely side.

The game started off scrappy with the quality from both sides not being particularly good, however Histon were enjoying more of the possession.

It was clear to see what Ely’s game plan was as they got amongst the Histon players early on, conceding multiple fouls. The young Stutes rose to the challenge with central duo Brian-Jeffrey Alihonou and Kyle Moran hustling and bustling in midfield.

Histon stuck to their philosophy, playing some good football and starting to click with new signing Ben Landsdhoff causing lots of problems with his electric pace and driving runs in behind coming close on a couple of occasions.

Playmaker Christian Carter was up to his usual mischief, floating around in the final third dictating the game and displaying a fantastic range of passing. Carter’s dead balls were causing Ely issues, he whipped in a delicious free kick which Moran headed directly at the keeper but with too much power to collect and it rebounded back to Moran who smothered the ball into the back of the net.

Histon were now rampant, looking dangerous each time they went forward. After some good play down the left hand side the ball fell to Landshoff who cleverly sent the defender to the shops and neatly tucked the ball into the corner.

HT: Histon deservedly winning 2-0 with the lads doing exceptionally well to of kept their discipline after very little protection from the referee.

Histon were forced into a couple of changes in the second half which continued in this manner turning it into a scrappy affair with no real fluidity or tempo.

Tom Wraight was more than up to the occasion and was exceptional in the second half dealing with anything that came his way. The right back had his hands full with one of the league’s top scorers and a tricky winger at his bay but did not give them a sniff all game.

Histon were cruising, managing the game very well and looking the more likely to go on and kill the game with a third goal, however 15 minutes before the end we lost the ball in a crucial area resulting in a pop shot that zipped up off the surface and beat goalkeeper Harvey Daniels.

In what was an expected nervy final 10 minutes, the lads showed the right mentality as they stayed calm and saw the game out.
