Ely City 0 Histon 1

Cambs FA Under 18 Youth Challenge Cup Semi-Final
Thursday 5th December 2019

We travelled over to the fens in what is always a tough and physical encounter trying to go one better than last year and make the final.

Within the first two minutes we gift wrapped a present with a short back pass leaving ex-stute Ollie Ward one on one with keeper Harvey Daniels who triumphed with a big save.

The future stutes then settled into the game, having the better of the possession and playing some slick stuff up until the final third only to then the lack any real quality, however they were knocking on the door.

Jay creek broke through and was brought down by the keeper, a stonewall penalty given with no complaints from Ely and with their manager organising a replacement goalkeeper on the sidelines, the linesmen who was on the other side of the pitch 60 yards away bizarrely disallowed the penalty as he deemed the keeper had got the ball.

We continued to press forwards and search for the goal, Tommy Stoker being a continual nuisance and causing lots of problems down the right hand side.

As half time approached the game was scrappy, Ely were mixing it up as they were struggling to get hold of our midfield, in particular the dangerous Tyger Smalls and at half time it was still 0-0.

The second half began the same as the first. Histon were caught sleeping and Ely’s left winger delivered a ball into the area which was guided onto the bar, a let off for the stutes.

Smalls was picking the ball up in deeper positions and started to run the game, either leaving the midfield for dead with his driving runs or switching the ball left and right with both feet.

Smalls, who was limping around after being fouled, showed his character and tenacity as he pinched the ball back from 30 yards and went on one of his mazy runs skipping past three or four players as he broke into the area before coolly picking out Jay Creek who hammered the ball home from 8 yards. Histon 1 up!

Histon found their groove, Stoker who worked tirelessly all game was causing problems again in and around the box creating shooting opportunities for himself but the Ely City keeper was not to be beaten as he stood tall and made the saves.

Into the last 10 minutes and the game was stretched which suited us. Smalls broke on the counter and completely destroyed the full back before going one on one with the keeper but put the ball just wide. Moments later and the crafty Christian Carter broke through the lines but yet again the keeper came out on top with another save.

At the other end Jack Moss and Alfie Lawrence kept Ward at bay, as they had for the majority of the game dealing with the direct approach of Ely with the striker left a frustrated figure in the end.

FT: Ely City 0 Histon 1 and we’re into the Cup Final!

Superb TEAM performance, brilliant from the boys in a game where their resilience and character was really tested by some interesting decisions. They came through unscathed and their quality shone through in the end.

MOTM- Tyger Smalls and Tommy Stoker couldn’t separate the two!

Thank you for your continued support. Be great to see all of you at the final in April, date and venue to be confirmed!

Matt and Mark.
