Royston Town 1 Histon 2
Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division
Wednesday 23rd October 219
We travelled to Garden walk on a wet evening, missing 6 players who started in last week’s tremendous victory meaning a call up into the squad for 3 of our U16s.
We knew Royston were dangerous from the enthralling 4-3 result we had earlier in the season and the boys were set the task of ensuring no gifts were given away this week.
In a tightly contested first half, Histon we’re getting lots of joy on the counter attack as Royston struggled to deal with the pace of the frontline particularly down the left side where Tommy Stoker was operating.
Central midfielder Kyle Moran was patrolling the game, winning lots of tackles and headers and it was after 20 minutes that he showed his quality on the ball, slotting a pass through to Stoker who’s delightful first touch gathered the ball into his path to then clinically execute a shot into the bottom corner. Histon 1 nil up.
A couple of forced changes due to injury upset the flow of the game for both sides however Royston were getting some joy of their own in the final third. The defensive line stood strong and resolute though, dealing with everything coming their way.
Goalkeeper Harvey Daniels was called upon twice in the final 10 minutes of the half showing his exceptional agility to ensure the young Stutes stayed in front at halftime.
HT- Royston 0-1 Histon, the away team just about edging the contest at this stage.
The second half called upon the character and desire of the team as the crows pilled on the pressure and were constantly testing Histon’s resolve. U16s player Dan Medd rose to the challenge, him and centre back partner Alfie Lawrence showing a sound understanding between them, continually blocking and sweeping everything up.
Tom Wraight at right back was taking no prisoners either as he showed true grit and determination with some solid tackling as he faced a relentless tricky winger.
The game was getting far too stretched and Histon had lost control of the midfield. Under constant attack, Royston won numerous corners and if it wasn’t for a dominating super agile performance from Daniels the scores would’ve been level by now.
The pressure finally paid off for the home side when a corner was whipped in and nodded into the the net. Royston 1-1 Histon. U16s winger Harrison Butt showed no fear as he made his 18s debut and his endless work rate, top quality decision making and driving runs meant Histon were still dangerous going forward.
The game continued in the same manner, Royston pushing for the win as they now had the momentum but in the dying minutes of the game the ball fell to Christian Carter 30 yards out on the left-hand side. He had seen the goalkeeper was slightly off his line and he struck the ball sideways with pin point accuracy, the ball dipping into the goal. An absolute screamer to win us the game and it’s fair to say that Carter is having a goal of the season competition with himself at the moment!
FT: Royston Town 1 Histon 2
The young crows will feel like Histon stole the 3 points as they deserved more out of the game. Another great result for us though with a depleted side that included three U16s players that all did themselves justice. Special mention to the back 5 this week who were epic throughout the game.
MOM- Harvey Daniels.
Thanks to everyone that travelled to support us, you are amazing! See you all again soon.
