Stevenage Ladies Reserves 1 Histon Ladies 2 (aet)
Eastern Region Women’s League Plate Semi-Final
Sunday 14th April 2019
Histon booked their place into the final of the League Plate, Katie Segrave’s opening goal being cancelled out to send the game into extra time and Kaya Haq’s free kick at the end of the first period of this was enough to win the tie.
After Kayleigh Castell side footed over the top from 15 yards out with a great chance just over a minute into the game Histon took the lead with 19 minutes gone, Sophie Lanham’s corner on the right being kicked back out towards her, which she returned, Seagrave heading the ball into the air towards goal and the Stevenage goalkeeper only finding herself able to push the ball into the roof of the net.
Three minutes later Stevenage were level in controversial circumstances, away midfielder Lauren Martin heading a corner away from goal at the near left post before being caught late on the ankle by a home attacker, forcing her to the ground in pain; play continued and the hosts put the ball into the net after the assistant referee had raised his flag in the air, but, after a consultation with the referee, the goal was confirmed as Martin received treatment next to the post.
Rebekah Finch headed a Lanham corner just off target two minutes after the restart, Ali Wright having her 25 yard drive denied by the ‘keeper on 56 minutes in the best chances of the second half for Histon as the deadlock couldn’t be broken.
Extra time began and, two minutes into added time at the end of the first half of it, Haq found herself with a free kick 25 yards out and just right of centre of goal; she hit it to the left of the far post and the combination of the curl she put on the ball and a little wind brought it back in and under the bar to leave the Stevenage ‘keeper unable to make a save.
A tense second period of extra time then ensued but, with Castell just being unable to connect to a low cross, Finch shooting wide under pressure and Segrave hitting the top of the bar with a right sided cross, Histon looked the more likely to score as they held out until the final whistle.
