Lance Key continues his squad’s pre-season build up with the visit of Southern League Central Division Champions Royston Town on Saturday afternoon.
The Gaffer is pleased with how preparations are going so far but knows there is plenty more to do before the season kicks off in just three weeks time with a trip to Wroxham in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Premier Division on Tuesday 1st August. “The squad has trained well over the last couple of weeks” the Gaffer said, “but you don’t get the intensity in training that you do by playing games and I want the squad to be match sharp and ready when we go to Wroxham. We’ve got a good mixture of games ahead of us which will help us to build the players’ fitness and sharpness. There’s a good core to the squad with players staying from last season and we’ve been able to take a good look at some of the young Scholars that have been impressive and are pushing for places in the squad now. I’m also pleased that Jos Gwynne has re-signed for us after his season last year was hampered by injury. He’s nearing full fitness again now and he has shown plenty of ability.
We’ve also had a number of triallists in of course and will continue to assess players as we go on. It’s always difficult to finalise deals with players at this time of year as most have various options in front of them but I’m hopeful that we can reach agreement with 4 or 5 more players in the near future.
