Rags To Riches - Manor Community College Fashion Show

On Wednesday 30th June, Histon FC FITC was invited to attend a Rags to Riches fashion show at Manor Community College. This was a great opportunity to build our links with one of our friends and neighbours schools, while appreciating some fantastic work from the participating children and their incredibly hard working and imaginative teachers.

The Fashion Show was great entertainment, and in my opinion, very eye opening. The effect of recycling and being resourceful is so important to the world. Without it, at the largest scale, we would be draining the world resources leaving us polluting, destroying life as we know it, homeless, without food and a way of life.

Below is the story of the Rags to Riches Fashion Show written by Naila Din, Director of Creative Arts at the Manor CC:

Rags 2 Riches Fashion Show - started at the Manor in 2006. The show has seen much interest over the years, from outside organisations keen to promote the ethos of recycling and reusing.

Colleges around the country are now offering similar shows setting challenges for students to explore waste through Fashion and Design. The event at the Manor Community College is sponsored by environmental agencies who award students for their innovative designs. The sponsors for the event are CCORRN (Cambridge Community Reuse and Recycle Network), Donarbon, Sustainable City at Cambridge City Council, Sue Ryder Care, Scrap Stores and HEART FM.

This year the theme of the Rags 2 Riches Show was 'we are the world'. Students explored cultures from around the world making outfits from waste materials; nothing could be purchased. We are proud of all the students who took part in the event and in particular the winning students who are here tonight to share their achievement with you.

If you want to take part in the challenge next year - ask your school for an entry form which will be in your schools in November. Maybe we might even have Lilly Cole take an interest in what we at the Manor are doing in the name of Fashion and Design.

As part of FITC attending the event, we invited all the winners of the various awards down to the Glassworld to be Guests of Honour. For which they fittingly attended the pre- season friendly against the African National Select side. The students were presented on the pitch before the game and had the opportunity for photos and autographs with the players after the game. On behalf of Histon Football Club, we hope you all enjoyed your evening and we hope and look forward to seeing you at our games again soon.

I would like to congratulate the Headteacher Ben Slade, Director of Creative Arts Naila Din, Ewen Chamberlain for inviting myself along, all the teaching staff and all the parents involved for a great evening and we hope that it can be the first of many links with Manor Community College.
