Manager pleased with pre-season progress

Yaxley are our next pre-season opponents at The Glassworld when they visit on Tuesday evening before we travel to Stotfold on Saturday afternoon as Lance Key continues his squads’ pre-season build up.

The Gaffer was again pleased with Saturday’s showing against Royston Town, “they offered a much sterner test” said the Manager. “They put a very strong side out, particularly in the first half, moved the ball well and had quality going forward. I was pleased that we stood up to that and didn’t look overawed. They punished us by scoring from the two chances we conceded to them and that shows the difference against strong sides like theirs, they have that quality in front of goal.

We were able to look again at a number of players and it’s good to be able to get the necessary minutes in to them. We looked sharper and fitter and we’re getting better as we get nearer to the start of the season. We need to find an end product though, another striker to play up front and they are difficult to get but we’re hopeful we can add the right player or players soon.”

With the Yaxley game coming up tomorrow evening the Gaffer will continue to rotate players around and will continue to give some of our own Scholars the opportunity to impress. Joe Sutton, Ollie Habergham, Liam Moir, Owen Peck and Taher Ali have all featured in games so far and Key said “the young Scholars have done really well. It’s a big step up for them but most of them have had some experience at senior level as they were out on loan last season. They have every chance to impress and to claim a place in the squad.”

One player unlikely to feature tomorrow is keeper Ayden Duffy who is carrying a slight hamstring problem. “There’s no point in risking Ayden so close to the season start” said Key, “it’s not a big problem but we need to be cautious with him. Owen Peck came in on Saturday for the second half and did well and he may well be involved again this week. I’m also hoping George Bugg will be available. He was involved last week with us, he’s a St Neots player but we’re hoping we can do a dual registration deal with them so we have him with us.”

Key has also confirmed the signing of three more players. Midfielder Charlie Brown, striker Ed Rolfe and centre half Brendan Lees have all signed now and will be part of the squad for 2017/18.
